Luke 12:48 -

"From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked"
I am not really into resolutions because I figure that if you are dedicated to something it shouldn’t matter when you start. That being said this seems as good a time as any to set a few goals and objectives for the coming year. So here are ten things that I really want to work on.
* Contemplate my Childhood More
Over the last few weeks, and after a well-needed visit home I have realized how much I love my life. I had pretty humble beginnings growing up in a trailer park in NE Ohio. God has blessed me more than I could possibly express. I want to be intentional to remember what God has done in my life over the years.
* Get Better at Maintaining My Blog
While it hasn’t even been a year yet my blog did surprisingly well in it’s inaugural year. I have had a website since 1997 but blogging is a whole different thing. I wanted the discipline of forcing myself to write something on a regular basis. I did o.k. I guess. I had people from 87 countries read my posts this year and had visitors from all 50 US States. I really started getting traffic in late November and through December which is a good sign of thing to come. This year I want to try and focus on being more consistent in posting weekly written article. I would like to double my current active subscribers list and hit list for 2012. These are baby-steps but I think they are good acts of discipline to keep me writing.
* Lose 15lbs
Over the course of this past year I have lost 5 lbs. I want to be aggressive and lose another 15 lbs. this year. I work a lot, and have travelling a lot this summer but I getting to the point where I really need to get in better shape. Also, I live on a beautiful Island for crying out loud. I need to get out and enjoy it more. So gain with the baby-steps, this time toward better health.
* Increase my Professional Network
I became a Christian in college so I have had quite the learning curve when it comes to my vocation. For the last nine years or so I have sat back and observed and tried to learn as much as I can about ministry. I will always be observing and learning but it’s about time for me to get in the ring and start getting to know more people and sharing a bit more. I think God has some good things planned here.
* Decrease Debt
I have always worked a lot. I worked multiple jobs in college and through seminary so that those objectives could be a reality for me. I still didn’t get through school though without a bunch of student loans though. After my wife’s car accident awhile back we lost a car and had to go get a new (used) one. So we have some things to pay off. We won’t get them all paid off this year but I hope to consistently put good dent in them and get closer to the goal of being debt free.
* Finish my Doctoral Work (Or at Least Get Very Close)
Minus a few papers, my formal classwork is done for my Doctor of Ministry in Theology and Science at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. I have a great project in production incorporating a the work of Søren Kierkegaard, Paul Tillich, Dietrich Bonheoffer integrated with a well-done Documentary that was featured at the Sundance and Tribeca film festivals. The film’s directors and producers are on board and my faculty committee is lined up. I’ve got a nice head start on the written portion. This year we bring it all together.
* Produce my First Book
This is long overdue. It needs to happen in one form or another this year and it will surely be the hardest resolution to keep. Want to know what it is going to be about? You’ll have to stay tuned in to see!
* Continue New Development at Providence Presbyterian Church
God has blessed me with a wonderful church family here on Hilton Head Island in Providence Presbyterian Church. This is a church with potential galore and we have been actively preparing the last two years for big things to happen here. I don’t want to be too presumptuous but by all accounts it seems like we are going to make some great, great strides this year!
* Spend More Time with my Wife
Anyone who knows my wife knows how awesome she is. This year we took a wonderful mini-vaca to St. Augustine, FL and it was wonderful spending time with her. We took a sunset cruise, a carriage ride, stayed at the Penny Farthing Inn and had a great time. Like they say, we really are BFF’s 4 Eva, but I really want to be intentional this year about spending more time together. Life on this Earth is short, it is important that we spend everyday that we can with those we love.
* Make Room for the Spirit
I know that “making room for the Spirit” is kind of a theologically ridiculous statement since we are incapable of containing it. That being said, I find that we can be pretty persistent at resisting the Spirit’s promptings to do God’s will and follow accordingly. God has recently opened up some interesting opportunities for me with OpenChurch.com and friends at The Anchor Fellowship. Every year I am amazed and mystified by God’s grace in providing new opportunities. I am sure 2012 will be just as fruitful.
So these are my 10 resolutions posted for public accountability. How will you change your life for the better in 2012? May God Bless You and yours in the coming year!
